Bioindication: basic concepts. Main ecological characteristics of a bioindicator. Two ways of bioindicate: react and accumulate. The homeostasis of the bioindicators. Times and ecological relevance of the bioindicator responses to environmental changes. Meaning of stress and stressor. Bioindication at different levels of biological organization. Integrity and functionality of the ecosystem. Check of the plant and animal communities status and evaluation of the environmental quality. Two types of ecosystem approach: the theories of the Top-down and Buttom-Up. Bioindication and environmental monitoring. Bioindication in aquatic, terrestrial and aerial environmental. Main examples of application of the bioindication procedures. Assessment of the environmental quality through ecological and biotic indices. Experimental and standard techniques for the biomonitoring. The Bioindication in Italy. Main European and national directives. National and international institutional bodies for the environmental monitoring.
