GENERAL BIOGEOGRAPHY (3 CFU). SCHOOLS AND METHODS FOR STUDYING THE GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION OF THE ORGANISMS. RELATIONS AMONG BIOGEOGRAPHY, ECOLOGY, SYSTEMATICS AND EARTH SCIENCES. PALEOGEOGRAPHY AND THE THEORY OF CONTINENTAL DRIFT; PLEISTOCENE CHANGES IN CLIMATE AND COASTLINE SHAPE (GLACIAL/INTERGLACIAL AND PLUVIAL/INTERPLUVIAL PERIODS, MARINE REGRESSIONS AND TRANSGRESSIONS) WITH THEIR EFFECTS ON ANIMAL AND PLANT DISTRIBUTION. THE GEOGRAPHIC RANGE (DISPERSAL, COLONIZATION, BARRIERS, EXTINCTION). ISLAND BIOGEOGRAPHY AND FRAGMENTATION BIOLOGY. ENDEMIC AND RELIC SPECIES. VICARIANCE AND DISPERSAL. ANALYSIS OF BIOGEOGRAPHICAL REGIONS AND TRANSITIONAL ZONES (3 CFU): OLOARCTIC REGION (PALEARCTIC AND NEARCTIC SUBREGIONS), AFROTROPICAL REGION, INDOMALAYAN REGION, AUSTRALIAN REGION. GEOGRAPHICAL AND ECOLOGICAL TRAITS OF EACH BIOGEOGRAPHICAL REGION AND BASIC KNOWLEDGE ON FAUNA, FLORA AND VEGETATION. EXAMPLES OF SPECIES AND TAXONOMIC GROUPS ENDEMIC TO DIFFERENT BIOMES FOR EACH REGION, WITH HYPOTHESES ON THEIR ORIGIN. STUDY CASES: MADAGASCAR AND NEW ZEALAND.
