General characteristics of mobile networks. Current trends in the TLC market. Basic and Added Value services. General architecture of digital mobile networks: GSM and UMTS. Functional blocks and protocols for circuit switched and packet switched (GPRS) services. GSM: Physivcal layer characteristics, Radio frame structure, physical transportation and logical channels. Modulation, demodulation, conding and decoding techniques and formats (basic and enhanced). GSM: channel coding, interleaving and frequency hopping, MAC and RLC sublayers. Mobility management and power control. Call session control functions: inbound and outbound call control procedures, supplementary services, short message and multimedia message services. Functional blocks and protocols for packet switched services (GPRS) in GSM. GPRS: Mobility management, quality of service. Frame structure and virtual channel allocation in GSM/GPRS. Modulation, demodulation, conding and decoding techniques and formats (basic and enhanced) in GSM/GPRS. Queuing theory basics. Erlang Formulas.
