(syllabus)
The aim of the first part of the course is to furnish students with some fundamental ideas relative to:
- The definition of politics;
- The differences between science and non-science;
- How to construct scientific theories;
- The environment of the study of political science and the most common methodology used (through to the comparison);
- Some crucial themes, such as the state and the processes of state-building and nation-building and the process of European integration;
- The types and characteristics of political regimes (non-democratic and democratic) and their dismantling;
- The parts of the political system (elite and political classes, parties, groups).
The second part of the course will cover, always in a comparative aspect, the theme of democracy and its functioning. The following themes will be taken into consideration for discussion and amplification:
- Elections and electorial systems;
- Political representation;
- The democratic institutional systems (parliament, governments);
- The players and the dynamics of policy-making.

PS. Using the new edition of the Handbook (2016), the Gualmini's book is not necessary.
