21010008_1 ARCHITETTURA ANTICA: TEORIE, TIPI E TECNICHE - PARTE 1 in Master of Science - Restoration LM-4 ORTOLANI GIORGIO
(syllabus)
THE ORGANIC COMBINATION OF THE TWO ASPECTS OFFERS A DIDACTIC EXPERIENCE IN WHICH CLASS ASSIGNMENTS HELP THE STUDENTS EXPERIENCE ISSUES ARISING FROM THEORY LECTURES, WHICH IN TURN PROVIDE A CULTURAL-HISTORIC REFERENCE FRAME. IN THIS RESPECT, THE COURSE WILL ENCOURAGE THE STUDENTS TO USE DRAWING AS A COMPREHENSION-CHECK TOOL, AND WILL HIGHLIGHT THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE HISTORY OF ANCIENT ARCHITECTURE AND OTHER OPERATIONAL DISCIPLINES THAT ARE TIGHTLY RELATED TO IT, SUCH AS SURVEY, METROLOGY, AND RESTORATION. THE COURSE TAKES PLACE IN THE FIRST SEMESTER, AND THE PROGRAM INCLUDES FIELD-TRIPS TO ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES AND MONUMENTS, DURING WHICH SPECIAL DRAWING-ASSIGNMENTS MAY ALSO BE DONE. THE COURSE, COORDINATED WITH THE OTHER CLASSES IN THE FOURTH YEAR OF THE MASTER’S DEGREE COURSES, IS STRUCTURED INTO TWO SECTIONS, TIGHTLY RELATED TO EACH-OTHER, WHICH WILL ALTERNATE IN THE WEEKLY SCHEDULE: A. LECTURES ON HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE B. FOCUSES ON SPECIFIC ISSUES THE SEMINAR AIMS AT INTRODUCING THE STUDENTS TO THE STUDY OF GREEK AND ROMAN ARCHITECTURE, FROM THE ORIGINS OF CLASSICAL ORDERS TO THEIR DEVELOPMENT IN THE HELLENISTIC AND ROMAN AGE. THE COURSE-SECTION WILL THEN ILLUSTRATE THE FEATURES OF ROMAN ARCHITECTURE, ROOTED IN ITALIC TRADITIONS AND CONNECTED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF OPUS CAEMENTICIUM, WITHIN THE FRAME OF THE POLITICAL AND CULTURAL UNIFICATION OF THE MEDITERRANEAN WORLD; A GLOBALIZATION POLICY IN WHICH CLASSICAL ORDERS AND URBAN DESIGN PAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE.
MAIN TOPICS: ARCHITECTURE AND HISTORY: ROME IN THE THIRTIES; ASSIRIA AND MYCENAE: THE ORIGINS OF THE VAULTS AND DOMES; FROM THE THOLOS TO THE PANTHEON; VITRUVIUS AND HISTORY: CARYATIDS AND TELAMONS; TECHNIQUES AND MATERIALS IN GREEK ARCHITECTURE: THE ORIGIN OF ARCHITECTURAL ORDERS; CITIES AND ARCHITECTURE OF WESTERN GREEKS; ATHENS AND THE CLASSICAL AGE; LATE-CLASSICAL ARCHITECTURE: PELOPONNESE AND ASIA MINOR; HELLENISTIC ARCHITECTURE IN ROME AND IN THE EAST: ALEXANDRIA, SYRACUSAE AND PERGAMON; AUGUSTUS’ ROME: A RESTORATION OF THE RES PUBLICA AND THE URBS; ARCHITECTURE AND POWER: THE IMPERIAL FOR A; WELFARE AND CONSENSUS: THEATRES AND BATH BUILDINGS; THE VILLA FROM THE HELLENISM TO THE MODERN AGE; ROME, CONSTANTINOPLE, RAVENNA.
FOCUSES WILL INCLUDE GRAPHIC ASSIGNMENTS THAT WILL REQUIRE THE STUDENTS TO ANALYSE THE PROPORTIONAL, LINGUISTIC, TYPOLOGICAL, AND TECHNICAL FEATURES OF RELEVANT GREEK AND ROMAN BUILDINGS, PERTAINING TO THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES: TEMPLES, THEATRES, BATHS, BASILICAS, AND HOUSES. CLASS ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE INTRODUCED BY LECTURES THAT REFER TO HISTORIC SOURCES AND TREATISES, FROM VITRUVIUS ONWARD. VISITS TO MUSEUMS, ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES, AND MONUMENTS WILL COMPLETE THE COURSE, FOR A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE TOPICS RELEVANT TO THE ITS PURPOSES. TRIPS WILL BE A CHANCE FOR PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS, BY TAKING SKETCHES – A PRIMARY PRACTICE FOR ARCHITECTS -, NOTES, PHOTOS, ETC. IT IS RECCOMENDED TO ATTEND THE LECTURES.
THE TEST IS ORAL AND INDIVIDUAL. THE STUDENT’S KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL SKILLS WILL BE EVALUATED, ALSO BASED ON THEIR CAPACITY TO REFER TO A HISTORIC FRAME; THEY ARE EXPECTED TO KNOW THE CONTENTS OF THE DIFFERENT BOOKS OF VITRUVIUS, AND ANALYSE THE MAIN FEATURES OF THE MOST RELEVANT MONUMENTS OF EACH HISTORIC PERIOD, AND OF THE CLASSICAL ORDERS, THROUGH SCHEMATIC DRAWING. THE TOPICS OF THE PROGRAM WILL BE EVALUATED ALSO WITH THE INDENTIFICATION AND COMMENT OF SOME SLIDES OF THE BUILDINGS ANALYZED DURING THE LESSONS. THE OUTPUT OF CLASS ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE EVALUATED AS WELL.
