PHOTONICS
(objectives)
The course provides students with the fundamentals of the operation, design and characterization of a fiber optic link. Starting from the basics of guided optics, the main active and passive photonic devices are described, such as semiconductor lasers, LEDs, optical amplifiers, filters, modulators, multiplexers, etc. .., highlighting for each of them the key features and limitations.

• Optical waveguides and fibers Planar waveguides: dispersion equation; optical modes; fabrication processes and losses. Optical fibers: modes in a step index fiber; multimode fibers; chromatic dispersion; chromatic dispersion compensation; graded index fibers, plastic optical fibers; non-linear effects; WDM.
• Passive optical devices Planar lightwave circuit (PLC) devices: power splitters; directional couplers; MMI couplers; optical filters; Mach Zehnder interferometer; gratings; waveguide grating routers; Bragg gratings; Fabry-Perot interferometers.
• Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) Polarization states; Stokes parameters; Poincarè Sphere; principal states of polarizationStati di polarizzazione; PMD vector; differential group delay (DGD); PMD power penalty
• Optical Transmitters Absorption and emission in a semiconductor; LED; semiconductor lasers; DFB lasers; quantum dot lasers.
• Optical Amplifiers Performances, noise figure, semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA), wavelength converters; Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA); Raman Amplifiers.
• Optical Receivers PIN and avalanche photodiodes, noise; bit error rate (BER); eye diagram; sensitivity; quantum limit of photodetection.
• Optical Modulators Direct laser modulation; electro-absorption modulator; MZI modulators; modulation formats: CS, DPSK.
