MARRAFFA MASSIMO
(syllabus)
THE THEME OF THE COURSE IS THE ADAPTIVE FUNCTION OF OUR ABILITY TO "READ THE MINDS" OF OTHERS (MINDREADING). HUMAN INTELLIGENCE IS A CAPACITY LARGELY DEVOTED TO THE ANALYSIS OF COMPLEX INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS. IT IS MORE THAN LEGITIMATE TO SUPPOSE, THEN, THAT THIRD-PERSON MENTALIZATION, AS AN ESSENTIAL ELEMENT OF OUR SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE, HAS EVOLVED TO PROVIDE AN ADAPTIVE ADVANTAGE BOTH IN PURSUIT OF THE GOALS OF THE COMPETITIVE SYSTEM, AS HAS BEEN ASSERTED (FOR MORE THAN TWENTY YEARS NOW) BY THE SUPPORTERS OF THE SO-CALLED "MACHIAVELLIAN INTELLIGENCE HYPOTHESIS", AND IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE DEMANDS OF THE COOPERATIVE SYSTEM, AS HAS BEEN MORE RECENTLY PROPOSED.
