THE MAIN AIMS OF THE COURSE ARE: 1) RECOGNIZE MAJOR GROUPS OF MICROORGANISMS AND UNDERSTAND FACTORS INFLUENCING THEIR ENVIRONMENTAL DISTRIBUTION AND INTERACTIONS WITH HIGHER ORGANISMS; 2) LEARN ABOUT ROLES PLAYED BY MICROBES IN SOIL FORMATION, MINERAL WEATHERING, CARBON AND NITROGEN CYCLING; 3) LEARN ABOUT CULTURE-BASED AND CULTURE-INDEPENDENT MICROBIOLOGICAL METHODS; 4) GAIN LITERACY IN CRITICAL READING AND ANALYSIS OF SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE IN THE FIELD OF ENVIRONMENTAL MICROBIOLOGY .
