HISTORY OF GREEK AND ROMAN ARCHITECTURE
(objectives)
THE COURSE INTRODUCES TO THE ORIGINS AND DEVELOPMENT OF GREEK ARCHITECTURE THROUGH THE EXAMINATION OF RELEVANT BUILDINGS. THE MONUMENTS ARE ANALYZED IN THEIR HISTORICAL CONTEXT, AS WELL AS IN THEIR TOPOGRAPHICAL ENVIRONMENT: IN URBAN SPACES OR RURAL SHRINES. THE STRUCTURAL EVOLUTION OF GREEK TEMPLES IS RELATED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF ARCHITECTURAL ORDERS. THE MATURITY OF CLASSICAL ARCHITECTURE IS COMPARED WITH THE SUBSEQUENT DEVELOPMENTS RELATED TO THE CULTURAL "GLOBALIZATION" OF HELLENISTIC AND ROMAN AGES. THE DIFFERENT ARCHITECTURAL TYPES WILL BE COMPARED WITH MONUMENTS OF LATER PERIODS WHICH WERE INSPIRED BY THE PRESTIGE OF ANCIENT BUILDINGS. FOR EXAMPLE, THE KNOWLEDGE OF ANCINET ROMAN VILLAS IS ESSENTIAL IN THE UNDERSTANFING OF THE REBIRTH OF THE RENAISSANCE VILLA, AS THE ANALYSIS OF MODERN OR EVEN CONTEMPORARY BUILDINGS IS OFTEN ESSENTIAL FOR A BETTER KNOWLEDGE OF FRAGMENTARY ROMAN RUINS.
