The learned has a particular task: to promote, in general terms, through the progress of the sciences, the progress of humanity. The learned must make people aware of their real needs and point out new goals to them; he sees not only the present but also the future, and can show the new degree to which humanity must strive. In this sense the learned is the "educator" of humanity. And he is also an example of morality, showing in himself the highest degree of moral perfection attainable in his day. The learned does for professional activity what for others is a parenthesis, an escape from daily work; he has the absolute duty to fight for the truth.
