Scientific activity and current research interests
The scientific activity of Giancarlo Della Ventura developed in different fields of Mineralogy and Applied Mineralogy, including:
(1) Mineralogy and petrology of volcanic rocks from central Italy, and crystal-chemistry of Th, U, and REE-bearing minerals. Such a work led to the discovery of 14 new mineral species and to the use of volcanic micro-mineralogy to model the geochemical behaviour of light and heavy to incompatible elements in the Roman comagmatic Province.
(2) Synthesis and crystal-chemistry of amphiboles, micas and hydroxyl-bearing silicates. This activity started in the 1980’s at the Laboratory of mineral synthesis of CNRS (Orléans, France); during the following 25 years it has been mainly aimed at studying the crystal-chemistry of non-common elements in the amphibole structure. The availability of a large number of chemically well-controlled sets of samples led to the development and application of spectroscopic methods (FTIR, Raman, XAFS) as tools for the characterization of fibrous materials, and to the development of X-ray whole-powder-pattern structural analysis of synthetic, fine-grained silicates. In the frame of this research activity Giancarlo Della Ventura co-organized an MSA-GS short-course on the crystal-chemistry of the amphiboles, sponsored by the Accademia dei Lincei and held in Rome (October 2007), and was the Associated Editor of volume 67 of MSA Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry and a special volume of European Journal of Mineralogy dedicated to the event.
(3) Calibration of quantitative FTIR spectroscopy for the study of light-elements in silicates and its use in phase-transitions, dehydration and transformation processes at high-temperature. These techniques have been applied to different issues of interest in both Geology and Material Science, such as the CO2 diffusion in microporous minerals for designing new materials for carbon-dioxide sequestration or the dehydration processes of zeolite-like silicates.
(4) During the last years, a combination of FTIR and Raman spectroscopies with X-ray methods (diffraction and XAS spectroscopy) and Mössbauer spectroscopy has been extensively applied to address the oxidation/dehydration processes in silicates of petrological and geophysical interest. These studies allowed to recognize unexpected features of the high-temperature dynamical oxidation of iron in these minerals and its link with the loss of hydrogen and the eventual release of water at depths; this process is ultimately connected with the development of extremely anisotropic electrical conductivity in the rock and to large-scale phenomena such as seismicity and volcanism. This research topic was developed after two PhD projects, initially focused on the HT crystal chemistry of Fe-bearing amphiboles, that evolved thanks to several collaborations with scientists in mineral physics of different countries (Italy, Germany, UK, Canada) into the analyses of the crystal-physical properties of these rock forming silicates. Resonance Raman Scattering was applied for the first time in Geology as a tool to monitor the thermal range for the development of polarons (electron-phonon interactions) in a set of Fe-rich amphiboles common in subduction zones. The match of the observed temperature with those typical of high-conduction layers (HCLs) identified via Magnetotelluric methods showed that electron hopping phenomena in hydrous silicates may explain, or contribute significantly, to the HCL at crust/mantle conditions thus providing an elegant link between atomistic processes at short-range level and Earth-scale phenomena. These findings paved the way to novel spectroscopic tools, based on techniques widely available in Earth Sciences (FTIR, Raman), to address issues of interest to a wide ensemble of scientists such as geophysicists, volcanologists and ore geologists.
(5) Applied Mineralogy and the presence of pollutants, and in particular of fibrous minerals, in the environment. In the frame of these activities, he has co-directed an international PhD Thesis in collaboration with the Biochemistry Department of University of Bordeaux, founded by a Bilateral Vinci project. The project addressed the cellular toxicity of asbestos fibres, by developing novel spectroscopic techniques for the in vitro/in vivo study of the interaction between cells and asbestos. In the frame of these activities he supervised two research projects financed by the Italian Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri for the development of a portable mobile device (SPARCO) for air quality monitoring, conceived to collect, measure and analyse particulate matter (PM), two projects financed by INAIL aimed at the development of high-resolution techniques for the analysis of toxic volatile compounds in working sites and two projects financed by INAIL aimed at the development of a novel sensor system for the real-time analysis of airborne asbestos fibres. This last project ended with the preliminary patent of a prototype and its software based on artificial intelligence.
(6) Applications of mineralogical techniques to Cultural Heritage and Archeometric studies. These activities have been mostly carried out in the frame of collaborations with the DTC of Lazio (Distretto Tecnologico Beni Culturali) and Carabinieri of TPC (Tutela del Patrimonio Culturale).
