The workshop "Methods and instruments of historical-geographical research" provides a basic understanding of concepts, theories, methods and instruments of historical and geographical research. We shall also study current techniques of investigation on geographical sciences, with particular attention to the development of geographic data from databases, search of documentary sources (qualitative and quantitative), design of digital maps. Are required: basic knowledge of geography and basic computer knowledge (with initial testing for admission); analytical skills, ability to work individually and in groups. It requires a load of work to do outside the classroom. They provided evidence of selective testing in progress and the realization by students of a paper or a final product.

The material will be provided during the lessons.

Changes in settlement and rural landscape in the Middle Ages are closely related with the ways and manners communities organize their presence in the environment. Long term landscape transformations shall be examined with a diachronic approach. Particular attention shall be given to the construction of the environment and of the habitat, which is still nowadays the base of settlement.

The course provides students with essential knowledge on the structuring of monetary systems (particularly the Bretton Woods currency system) and on the financial networks and marketing channels of the 20th century. Special emphasis is given to the problems of the integration of the underdeveloped countries into the global economy.

The travel’s reports of the past are a preferred source for the construction of geographical thought and culture. Particularly between the late Middle Ages and Modern Age, travel’s relations allows to retrace the complex process of widening of Europeans’ geographical horizon. In western society the relationship between geography and travel’s reports has changed over the centuries, to the need to sort and reprocess the information gathered, to create a geographical knowledge built on valid rules, correlations between phenomena and rational criteria for classification.
During the course will be analyzed practices of travel, travelers and travel’s reports, in their various types. Will also be considered some examples of travel’s reports that, throughout history, have marked the collective imagination and the construction of the world’s modern image.

Europe before the modern era produced one of the most dynamic, transformative, and violent epochs in world history. The study of early-modern Europe also has generated some of the most exciting and important scholarship in the discipline of History: key approaches and methodologies – often borrowed from other disciplines – have evolved and been adapted to historical research, in turn influencing many fields beyond Historical Studies.
Taking as its focus the early modern period in Europe (1450–1750), this course is structured around one of the field’s most important areas of research in recent decades, cultural history. Applied in its broadest sense, it will provide not only the lens through which we view the period itself, but also our starting point for a critical analysis of its historiography, with a particular focus on classic studies from the Anglophone world that formed the foundations of the field. Our study will be grouped around three key themes that lend themselves best to a cultural-historical analysis: the so-called Renaissance, Reformations, and Age of Discovery. Case studies, primary documents, site visits in Rome, and critical readings of select secondary studies will help us explore the cultural history of the early-modern past, as well as problematize it through assessing the interpretations that have been the most influential in shaping the discipline.
The course will be relevant, not just to those students who are undertaking studies in the pre-modern period, but also to those who wish to broaden their understanding of key historical approaches and methodologies that underpin historical research in any field, especially from the Anglophone world.
The course will be conducted over ten weeks of classes (23/2/16-11/5/16); for the first six weeks of classes, there will be four contact hours: one two-hour lecture (Tuesday) and one two-hour seminar (Wednesday); in the first session, a survey of the week’s theme will be provided in a lecture format, and in the second session, weekly set readings will be analysed and discussed in an interactive group seminar format. (There will be no classes scheduled from 28/3 to 8/4). For the final four weeks of the course, we shall meet for three hours on Wednesdays only (three field trips in Rome, and the final week will be in the usual classroom at Roma Tre).

Unit I - 6 CFU

The course will adopt an international and comparative approach to women’s history in the contemporary period. It will encompass both methodological issues, such as the use of gender as a category, or of biographies, and aspects of the condition of women and the process of their emancipation in Italy and other western countries. Students will be able to analyze themes of interest to them through discussion and individual or group presentations during classes, and choose most of the texts (available in English translation where required) for the final exam.

Christian cult and images: sources and historiographic debates

The iconographic expression, as communicative tool of the religious message, follows the Christianity’s life, since the first centuries, with several senses and utilizations, but during the time on various occasions it was object for hard disputes about its use. The course intends to probe some forms of the visual language’s use from the Christian confessions, dwelling in particular upon the signification and enjoyment of figurative arts in the cult, homiletic and religious instruction, in particular the debate about the images’ use in the liturgy and religious practice in the Christian churches in the period of the protestant and catholic Reformation.

Environmental policy and sustainability. The course presents a brief overview of the main schools of thought in environmental matters, following their development especially in recent decades. The course discusses then about methods and tools of environmental policy, illustrates the geography of environmental resources and examines the role of the actors in environmental policy at different geographical scales, from global to local. The problems are also analyzed through some case studies related to different parts of the world. There will be lectures, an excursion and eventual workshops.

The course aims to provide students with the knowledge and tools critical to understanding the changes taking place in models and forms of participation in the modern public arena, generated by the ever closer interaction between political system and its actors, on the one hand, and media and communication system, on the other.
The first part of the course is devoted to the changes taking place within the public and political scene and the most important theoretical contributions. In the second part will be considered the main areas of transformation of political communication in relation to the recent history of Italy. In the third part will analyze the role played by television and social media in the popularization of politics.
The course includes the viewing and analysis of audiovisual materials propaganda such television programs, documentaries, commercials, posters. A good knowledge of the Italian contemporary history is preparatory to the course content.

History of Eastern Europe in the XIX and XX centuries

The course is a reading, discussion, and writing seminar on the general theme of "light" as a distinguishing and determining factor of photographic language in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Class lectures on specific images will introduce the theme, together with a presentation of the main issues of the critical and theoretical debate. The seminar will develop a program of weekly readings, with individual presentations followed by class discusssions.
For the final exam, students are required to write an original paper on one of the themes discussed in class. The theme, sources, and deadlines of the final paper must be discussed with the instructor during the seminar.
Attendance is strictly required.

A bibliography and a list of required readings will be provided at the beginning of classes.

The course will investigate the relation between the urban spaces and the different forms of belonging and perticipation, that is citizenship. In order to update the couple city-citizenship, the course will provide the principal and transdisciplinary tools - in philosophy, legal studies, sociology, geography, history, politics - in a comparative approach.

The workshop "Methods and instruments of historical-geographical research" provides a basic understanding of concepts, theories, methods and instruments of historical and geographical research. We shall also study current techniques of investigation on geographical sciences, with particular attention to the development of geographic data from databases, search of documentary sources (qualitative and quantitative), design of digital maps. Are required: basic knowledge of geography and basic computer knowledge (with initial testing for admission); analytical skills, ability to work individually and in groups. It requires a load of work to do outside the classroom. They provided evidence of selective testing in progress and the realization by students of a paper or a final product.

The course provides students with essential knowledge on the structuring of monetary systems (particularly the Bretton Woods currency system) and on the financial networks and marketing channels of the 20th century. Special emphasis is given to the problems of the integration of the underdeveloped countries into the global economy.

- The Marshall Plan, the birth of the European Union and the Comecon.
- The integration of developing countries and neo 70s.

- The Bretton Woods currency system.
- Apogee and decline of the gold-dollar standard exchange rate and flexible regional monetary agreements.

Environment, economy, society in Italy (centuries XIX-XX).
The course consists of two parts, perfectly complementary. The first part, introductory, intends to provide an essential framework of environmental history. The second part, quite wider, intends to analyze, with reference mainly to Italy during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, environmental changes that accompanied the use of resources and the more general dynamics of development of economy and society. Particular attention will be paid to the analysis of identifying characters (knowledges, cultures, mentalities) that the relationship with the relative environmental contexts and the directions for use of the relative resources have imprinted to the local societies.

The course will adopt an international and comparative approach to women’s history in the contemporary period. It will encompass both methodological issues, such as the use of gender as a category, or of biographies, and aspects of the condition of women and the process of their emancipation in Italy and other western countries. The course will analyze the evolution of relations between the United States and Europe from the end of the Second World War to the emergence of a post-American world. The first module will focus upon key moments in the origins and evolution of the transatlantic relationship during the Cold War, such as the Atlantic Charter, the Marshall plan, the formation and evolution of NATO, the Suez Canal crisis and the Vietnam conflict, and proposals for a new transatlantic bargain. The second module will discuss transatlantic relations after the end of the East-West division. While the central theme of the course will be the history of relations between the United States and Europe, analytical perspectives about the nature of the transatlantic community will also be presented and debated.

History of Eastern Europe in the XIX and XX centuries

The workshop "Methods and instruments of historical-geographical research" provides a basic understanding of concepts, theories, methods and instruments of historical and geographical research. We shall also study current techniques of investigation on geographical sciences, with particular attention to the development of geographic data from databases, search of documentary sources (qualitative and quantitative), design of digital maps. Are required: basic knowledge of geography and basic computer knowledge (with initial testing for admission); analytical skills, ability to work individually and in groups. It requires a load of work to do outside the classroom. They provided evidence of selective testing in progress and the realization by students of a paper or a final product.

The material will be provided during the lessons.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course focuses on the basic topics and issues in the field of International law and aims at providing an overall view taking into account the main trends emerging in the inter-State relations, the existing instruments for the protection of human rights and the contribution of international organizations to the economic development and peace.

SEMINARS
From the beginning of November seminars will be organized for the students of the course on the following topics:
- the international protection of foreign investments and the instruments for the settlement of investor-State disputes
- the international protection of indigenous peoples
- the case law of the European Court of Human Rights in the field of State immunity

FINAL ASSESSMENT
The final assessment will take place in oral form according to a calendar that will be established well in advance. Reference will be made to the suggested texts and, for attending students, to the discussion of cases examined through the seminars.

CLASS SCHEDULE
Lectures will start on October 5th (6 hours per week Monday/ Thuesday/Wednesday) + Seminars.

ATTENDANCE
Class attendance is not compulsory. However, active participation in the discussion of cases submitted to students and the positive outcome of texts distributed during the course will be taken into account for the final evaluation. At the end of the course, a certification can be obtained by attending students

The course will start from a historical overview of migration in the twentieth century, and then describe the situation of postwar Italy, between emigration and immigration; and identify the steps of the immigration phenomenon in Italy to this day. The course provides insights on political refugees, the legislature of asylum, the foreign communities - between inclusion and exclusion; providing also a working group on the analysis of the image of immigrants in Italy, with its prejudices and stereotypes; Policy emergency, which has characterized our country; on Europe and immigration policies, currently in the eye of the media.

The course aims to introduce students to the theories of media communication and their sociological analysis, promoting a critical comprehension of the relationship between the the mass media and the traits of contemporary society.
The first part is focused on the history of the media, the main sociological theories, and on the relationship among audiences, media and effects.
The second part is focused to the analysis of the impact of the social media on the forms of socialization cooperation and participation.

The course provides students with essential knowledge on the structuring of monetary systems (particularly the Bretton Woods currency system) and on the financial networks and marketing channels of the 20th century. Special emphasis is given to the problems of the integration of the underdeveloped countries into the global economy.

II. The circuits of international trade.
- The Marshall Plan, the birth of the European Union and the Comecon.
- The integration of developing countries and neo 70s.
- The return to free trade in the 80s and the birth of the World Trade Organization.
III. Currency systems
- The Bretton Woods currency system.
- Apogee and decline of the gold-dollar standard exchange rate and flexible regional monetary agreements.

The course will be organized in seminars: the material to be studied will be distributed by the teacher during the lessons; the students not attending the course are requested to contact the teacher.

Christian cult and images: sources and historiographic debates

The iconographic expression, as communicative tool of the religious message, follows the Christianity’s life, since the first centuries, with several senses and utilizations, but during the time on various occasions it was object for hard disputes about its use. The course intends to probe some forms of the visual language’s use from the Christian confessions, dwelling in particular upon the signification and enjoyment of figurative arts in the cult, homiletic and religious instruction, in particular the debate about the images’ use in the liturgy and religious practice in the Christian churches in the period of the protestant and catholic Reformation.

Environment, economy, society in Italy (centuries XIX-XX).
The course consists of two parts, perfectly complementary. The first part, introductory, intends to provide an essential framework of environmental history. The second part, quite wider, intends to analyze, with reference mainly to Italy during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, environmental changes that accompanied the use of resources and the more general dynamics of development of economy and society. Particular attention will be paid to the analysis of identifying characters (knowledges, cultures, mentalities) that the relationship with the relative environmental contexts and the directions for use of the relative resources have imprinted to the local societies.

The course will adopt an international and comparative approach to women’s history in the contemporary period. It will encompass both methodological issues, such as the use of gender as a category, or of biographies, and aspects of the condition of women and the process of their emancipation in Italy and other western countries. Object of the course is the Islamic legal tradition and its historical development in the different areas of Islamic world. The comparative approach to the study of Islamic juridical institutions (with main reference to family law and criminal law) will be used to show the peculiarities of a system based on a divine law and, at the same time, the influences exercised on it by other legal system (i.e. the so-called Western legal tradition).
