Details on opportunities and contributions for research I obtained my PhD in Physics from the University of Roma “Tor Vergata” on Nov, 6th 2012. The title of my thesis was “Effects of elastic field anisotropy on the heteroepitaxial growth of Ge on vicinal Si surfaces”. The PhD research project was focused on the self-assembly of epitaxial semiconductor quantum dots induced by anisotropic elastic interactions on vicinal surfaces, as well as on the Finite Element simulation of the elastic properties of heteroepitaxial nanosystems. My thesis presents a novel approach to engineering the growth of strained epitaxial films based on tailoring the elastic-interaction potential between nanostructures with substrate vicinality. This work has a twofold contribution: It adds to the understanding of the role of the elastic interactions in determining the configuration and the evolution of self-assembled quantum dot structures which is a central topic in the current physics research field. In addition, it paves the way to the development of conceptually new strategies to position and control the properties of semiconductor quantum dots, based on the manipulation of heteroepitaxy through intrinsic properties of the substrate. Since the elastic field is a common key parameter, the analysis is readily applicable to other heteroepitaxial systems. For instance, I applied it to the study by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy of epitaxial metal nanoparticles grown on the outer walls of multiwall carbon nanotubes (Carbon 50, 3616). The results of my PhD research appeared in several papers (among them, 2 on Phys. Rev. Lett., 4 Phys. Rev. B, 2 Appl. Phys. Lett. and 3 book chapters). Recently I was awarded a highly competitive postdoctoral fellowship funded by ETH-Zurich and the Marie Curie Actions to explore atomic-scale structures for possible applications in computation and data-storage with the aim to demonstrate the use of single magnetic atoms on surfaces as qubits. I investigated these systems by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements and STM. To achieve long spin relaxation time, one needs to protect the magnetic states of the single atom from quantum tunneling of the magnetization and from scattering with the electrons of the supporting substrate. In this context, my work demonstrates, for the first time, that individual rare-earth atoms on ultra-thin insulating layers grown on non-magnetic metal substrates exhibit magnetic remanence and, therefore, are the first magnets formed by a single surface-adsorbed atom. In addition, these magnets have a record-high coercive field of 3.7 T, a magnetic lifetime of 1500 s at 10 K, and their hysteresis loop remains open up to 30 K. This first example of a single atom magnet shows bistability at a temperature which is significantly higher than the best single molecule magnets reported so far. Its extraordinary performances are achieved by a suitable combination of magnetic ground state and adsorption site symmetry, as well as by suppressing spin-electron scattering with conduction electrons by ultra-thin insulating layers. The first results of this work have been published in Science 352, 318 (2016). Other papers are at the moment under submission. Since my PhD, I have been regularly involved in the didactic activity of my department. As an assistant, I taught the general physics course with lab activities for bachelor students in Material Science of ETH Zurich (2013-2017). Previously, at the University of Roma “Tor Vergata“, I served as an assistant for Instructor of the courses of General Physics, Microscopy and Nanoscopy and Atomic and Molecular Physics.
